Cognifiber has announced $6 million in series A funding. The Israeli start-up aims to bring in-fiber photonic processing to market. The technology, the company claims, could deliver a 100x improvement in speed while reducing power consumption by 80%.

Earlier this month, a little-known startup based in Israel, CogniFiber, closed a $6 million round A of funding with the lofty goal of reimagining “how modern computing is processed”; nothing more, nothing less. A series of emails with the co-founder of CogniFiber, Dr. Eyal Cohen, sheds more light (pun intended) on what could be the most fundamental shift in compute technology of the last few decades.

Cognifiber , a company that builds stand-alone photonic artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators for IoT analytics, has its sights set on a new goal —  to replace traditional silicon with glass. By miniaturizing its in-fiber photonics, the startup claims it can bring server-grade capabilities to the  edge .

In an interview with Israel-based Cognifiber, All About Circuits learned of a new glass-based chip that could meet the mounting demands of edge computing.

Cognifiber’s photonics breakthrough brings closer the reality of AI deployments. “Our current results are outstanding, demonstrating capabilities to support future scalability and sustainability of data centers and edge computing,” said Dr. Eyal Cohen, Co-founder & CEO of CogniFiber.
